As the Camerons move into No. 10 Downing Street, the media have been happily snapping as their furniture and belongings are being removed from their former Notting Hill home. So far there have been pictures of the Prime Minister’s highly publicised bike, the usual cardboard boxes, mattresses, Meccano, a large TV, a retro seventies rug, Habitat furniture, and a huge purple bean bag.
It will be quite a wrench for the new family to move from their spacious home in Notting Hill to a much smaller Georgian flat in No. 10; no wonder Mrs Cameron was not that keen to move. It is planned that they should live eventually in the flat above No. 11 which is larger but will have to remain in the smaller No. 10 flat while the other is being renovated.
Tony Blair set a precedent for flat swapping at Downing Street when he asked Gordon Brown who was single at the time of the election in 1997 if he would allow the Blairs to live at No. 11 because it was bigger. Mr Brown and his new family then moved into the flat at No. 11 when he became Prime Minister.
Luggage moving in and out of Downing Street has always been a source of interest to the media, not only to see how the other half live but as an indication of when a move is imminent. After the last election when there was a hung parliament, luggage being loaded into a Land Rover outside Downing Street signalled the demise of Mr Brown.
Items like a large purple bean bag provide a fair indication of the fairly normal life that our government representatives lead. However public scrutiny is all very well when new people are moving in but not so comfortable for those moving out.

Who put the beans in beanbags?
When you think about it, sacks of coffee beans as the forerunner of the bean bag as something to relax on after a long hard day picking coffee seems a fitting origin for a piece of furniture whose popularity has extended over many decades.
