Are comfort hybrid bikes faster than mountain bikes?

I noticed that hyrbid bikes have lower speed ratio like 7-8 speed and mountrain bikes have 18-24 speed. What is the difference? Are hybrid bikes lighter than mountain bikes therefore faster?
both could be faster but it depends on the wheel size and type of tires you use
are you riding on or off road?
moumtain bikes are made for the rougHer riding in the states. the trails in europe have been around for a little longer and they are not as rougH and challening as usa one’s a mountain bike is sturdier than a cross bike and basically the cross bike is made to go fast on street and light trails and amountain bike is made to handle oof roading where a regular street bike would not be as well suited for more serious off roading
