Are mountain bikes great for commuting? Is it necessary to buy a mountain bike for commuting. I plan on riding over light trails and bumpy areas to get to work daily. Or can a regular commuting bicycle handle those light trails? BEST ANSWERS GETS POINTS?
it depends on what kind area you are in.city travel i would go with smooth tread or street tires.it will save you some energy.
mountain bikes make great commuters. although not as fast they get the job done, and it’ll be much more comfortable getting over those light trails and bumpy areas
A comfort bike will be better then a mountain bike. A commuter or hybrid will handle smooth gravel bike paths, it will depend on what you call bumpy.
Light trails? Get a hybrid or comfort bike. Severe off-road trails – get a mountain bike. On a road surface, the wider, knobby tires of a mountain bike will cause you to work harder because of the higher rolling resistance. Also, suspension parts soak up energy from the rider. Energy is absorbed throughout the frame & other parts before being transferred to the rear wheel.
If you think a hybrid with no suspension would work (other than a suspension seatpost) that would be the fastest & most efficient bike.

The best bike for the job appears to be a road bike called a hybrid. It has a much lighter frame, upright sitting, road type gears, and wider smooth tires. It will be fast, smooth and comfortable for your daily rides. It will give you the better ride on the street, road, path, on pavement, dirt, grass, gravel. It will do o.k. even on light trails. But, it will shine on roads and commuting.
Throw a rear rack and attach a large stainless steel basket to it. You can just toss in books, bags, even a large bag of groceries with no muss or fuss.
