Looking for a good mountain bike for the weekend warrior type. If not or you know what a good one is that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Big box stores have disposable bikes. Save your money and buy something that is at least put together by someone who knows how to build, adjust, size, and maintain bicycles. You can get an entry level mountain bike from a bike shop for $200-$300, and they come with better warranties, parts, and service.

Costco bikes seem heavier than bikes from a good bicycle shop, and the parts are not as good quality. I suggest you try renting bicycles of different quality to see the difference for yourself. I did this selection method when choosing a tandem bicycle, and was glad I did. Seemingly minor things like the smoothness of gear shifting, ride quietness, and steering geometry have a lot to do with whether you will enjoy the ride or just put up with it.
