With gas prices going up I decided to retrofit my bike with an all electric motor and battery pack from www.ampebikes.com.

@Monyornothin Yeah – the motor is now out of the bag once I read the forums. I got the SLA but will likely get the tube battery in a few months. It looks a lot lighter and lasts longer. All and all this is a COOL bike!

Nice looking bike ! Entertaining video…. Be careful about heat with the speed controller in the bik bag…. see forum comments and recommendations from Amped bikes about where to mount speed controllers and keeping them cool. My rear geared kit for my MTB comes tomorrow. Have to order tube battery next week. Can’t wait !

@taxivid like I said to @Dave51262, the motor overheated but they got me a new one…Amped has amazing service!!

    @jsmythib Great…let me know how it goes…post a video :)

  5. beernoob says:

@Dave51262 well…the motor overheated within 4 days. BUT..amped new about the problem (defective switch or something)..paid for return shipping and shipped me another one. I’ll say I have been VERY impressed with their service levels.

@Dave51262 I have’t noticed harder pedaling…I mean the batter pack (I got the SLA) is HEAVY. So that is what likely makes it tough when pedaling with no throttle. Any other questions?

  7. Dave51262 says:

Beernoob – I read that the direct drive hubs when not under power have some magnetic resistance which might make pedaling harder. Do you experience this when pedaling and not using the throttle? The geared hubs are not supposed to have this resistance?

Great video! I had not heard of ampedbikes kits. They look very good. I was thinking of a 2 stroke gas conversion kit, but this looks like a better idea. Thanks. How is everything now that you have had a few weeks to test out? Still satisfied with it?

@fastcacher1 So far it’s been a blast. thanks for watching!

Pretty cool! Let us know how it goes in the future.

That is pretty cool, good video!

@ChadzBeerReviews The road bike was $450 and the motor kit was $450. So $900. Sounds expensive but there are some mountain bikes that start at that price. Tomorrow is my first day taking it to work…I’ll see how it goes!

@fastcacher1 I rode it today just for fun and wow! It’s a blast to ride. My cyclometer wasn’t working so I couldn’t get a speed reading…gotta take that back to the bike shop.

    Hey great video!

I started ridding an electric bike earlier this year. It is an ezip with a ping battery (LiFePO4 24 volt 25AH) and weights about 18 lbs. I currently have 650 miles on it and it goes 35 miles per charge even with steep hills. You’re right they are a lot of fun to ride. I bet with a road bike you could go further per amount of electricity (watt hours) because it is more efficient with the thinner tires.

    Enjoy!

    cool video!
I see you found your tripod (or bought a new one?)
how much did all that run you?
I should buy a bike, I haven’t owned or ridden a bike since I was 13 or so, lol
good vid! I bet Mark from VBR will like this!
