What are some good brands of mountain bikes that I should look into for purchasing?

I’m looking on ebay for something relatively cheap, overall good, and very durable.

Downhill? Crosscountry? Freeride? All-mountain? Certain brands build better bikes for different uses. But, assuming you’re in the AM-XC camp, any of the major brands will be good bets. Ex. Trek, Giant, and Specialized top the list. For fewer dollars and still decent quality, look to Redline and Haro.
It may be more appropriate to look for levels of components (or grouppo) on the bike. For Shimano, LX, XT and XTR are all safe bets for something that’ll last and take abuse (in order of price/quality good to best). For SRAM X-7, X-9, and X-0.
A good fork is a must. If you’re going to be hard on it, get something with a coil spring or elastomer in the shock. If you want light weight, get an air-sprung fork – but it may not hold up to abuse. Air-sprung forks are usually used for lightweight cross-country rigs.
Another good source, beyond ebay, is pricepoint.com. You can get decent bikes, with good components, at a killer price.
    Good luck!
