What are some good hard tail mountain bikes?

Ok, so I need to buy a new bike, since my old bike isn’t holding up to my riding. It is a mountain road hybrid, and i keep breaking parts on rough trails. I need to buy a mountain bike, under 500$, with disk brakes, aggressive tires, non clip brakes for safety reasons, and preferably 27 or more gears.
Sorry, no clip peddles not brakes. Oh, i forgot to mention probably a hard back, full suspensions are too expensive.

Under 500 is a difficult price range for something truly heavy duty, the closest you’re going to get is under 600. Now, the prices on the websites are MSRP, so a shop might have a slightly lower price. The main thing you’ll want are “double wall” wheels. These are tougher than the standard single wall wheels on bikes under 500 with disc brakes. All these bikes will tougher than your hybrid though.

If you break something on one of the following bikes, it would be worth your while to upgrade that component at the same time. These bikes should allow you to upgrade with most standard parts. If you get a Trek, you can get their Red Shield protection which will cover most failures. Some shops will let you spend the difference between the upgraded part and the replacement part.
