Brand does not define quality. Every company builds bikes over a large range of prices. You can’t compare a bike priced at $500 with one that sells for twice as much. You have to figure out how much you are willing to pay, then look at as many bikes as you can in that price range. Differences at that price will be small, so often your choice will be based on fit and comfort

$5000 is enough for a good one, $10,000 for a really good one. Or to put it another way, what’s your spending limit?

Trek Fuel EX9. Top of the line full suspension Trek mountain bike with an aluminum frame.
The higher priced models use carbon fiber for the frames. Unless you are competing or just want the best (or bragging rights) don’t see the need for carbon fiber, especially in a mountain bike. Carbon fiber does not stand up to impact.
    Good Luck

If it comes from a REAL bicycle shop, the quality will be soooo much better than a discount or big box store bike. Define your spending limit. Then go extensively test ride as many as possible within that limit. Usually the one that feels the best to you is right for you.

All the major companies – Trek, Raleigh, Specialized, Kona, Giant, etc. – make good bikes. The better ones will have both a cassette hub vs. a freewheel hub & double walled rims.
