What does it mean when the connectors on my electric bike get very hot?

After a ride to the store I disconnect the battery and motor for charging and find that the connector
on the wires leading to the motor is very hot! How can I prevent that?

That means there is a lot of power going through those wires, or there is some resistance. It is either how it is supposed to be or there is a short somewhere. The wires might also not be adequate.

Pedal more so you don’t need as much battery power. You don’t want to recharge that battery every time you use it, it will get a memory and won’t hold as much as a charge.
