Go to http://www.performancebike.com.
Look for a medium or large bike (16-18″). You can get a hardtail (front suspension, no rear suspension) if you want to learn how to ride technically better. Look for a full suspension if you want a smoother ride that will be more forgiving of your mistakes.
Purchase as much of a bike as you can afford. You’ll get more bike for your money by purchasing a hardtail. But think about what you’ll need right now and what you think you’ll need 6 months to 1 year from now. That way your skill level won’t bypass the performance level of the bike.
If at all possible go to a bike shop first and find a bike that fits you properly and then order it online. The techs there can match you up with exactly what you need. They may even beat the online price and then there is no waiting for the bike to get shipped.
I would suggest doing your research at a few websites and mountain bike forums online. Then head to the local bike shop and hop on a few models that you’re really excited about. This way you know exactly what type of bike you’re looking for.
After that, scan http://www.craigslist.org
This is the best way of getting a great bike for a great price. With these economic times, people are getting rid of their expensive toys for a little extra $crill. I wouldn’t be surprised if you could land one for about 1/2 the price they sell for in the stores. Plus, you don’t have to pay tax.
If you want to help out the bike shop you used to test-drive a few of the bikes you were look at – just be sure to use them for tune-ups, extra gear, etc.
