With bikes, you often get what you pay for. Unfortunately, $400 is a pretty low price point–better beginning mountain bikes start in the $600 range, I’d say. With that said, however, there are still some options available for less than or close to $400. Try the KHS Alite 300 ($379), the Trek 3900 ($479) or the Raleigh Mojave 5.0 ($500).
The Trek jack 1 is what i have it isn’t the best bike but it can stand up to a lot i recommendd it. I jump it and trail ride it pretty hard and it stands up fine. Its 400$ new.
This is a Windor not the best brand but it is full suspensionon a plus for downhill and it has discs which makes its Better and its in your price range.
$400 budget is a little tight for a decent quality MTB. I would recommend saving a little more and holding out for a better bike. What it really comes down to is build quality and durability. If you will be in rugged terrain, it is even more important.
The #1 thing I would have to say is to look at hardtail MTB’s. “Real” full suspension MTB’s are not found at those price points. At best you will end up with a Single-Pivot suspension design and a “pogo-stick” spring shock.
The $600 price point has some really nice hardtail offerings for 2010. In terms of bang-for-the-buck I’ll recommend the following bikes in order (keep in mind they may require a little bit more budge).
#1 – Felt Q620 – Fork w/Lockout, decent components, hydraulic disc brakes (VERY nice at this price) and double-wall rims (also important for wheel strength in rough terrain) $649
#2 – Giant Yukon – Better fork (Rock Shox Dart 1), comparable components, mechanical disc brakes (OK, but not quite as good), comparable double-wall rims $600
#4 – Giant Rincon – Comparable fork, same components, same brakes, comparable wheels &500
Overall, the Felt has the best features at either pricepoint, and the $649 Felt is a great buy. Ultimately its your choice, but hopefully this helps you out.
Try a Forge Sawback 5XX for $400.
