What would be the best, most cost effective way to transport mountain bikes with my small car?

I do not have any sort of roof mount available, nor a hitch. I really do not want to make any holes or anything in the body of the car either. I have tried to fit my bike inside but it is just too big- and my sister and I have plans to go on a lot of trips this summer with our bikes. So a transportation method suitable for two would be ideal. Also something that isn’t going to cost me too much either:) Any suggestions?
My car is an ‘02 Toyota Corolla, if that helps.

one of those clamp on bike racks, would probably run less than 50.00…

Wal-mart and K-mart carry a cheap Bell bike rack, it’s like $40. It hooks onto the back of your car with straps and clamps that fit on the edge of your trunk. You may want to put a towel under it to be sure it doesn’t scratch the paint, but otherwise, no problems. I have one, works great, holds two bikes. They also make a little more expensive three bike model.

Trunk racks are the cheapest and fit ALL your requirements. Available most anywhere.

M R is right, and trunk racks aren’t very expensive.

You can also hit craigslist.org and you can always find people unloading roof racks and other carriers. My local edition had several for $50, name brands like Thule…

Your Corolla is well suited to many kinds of racks…
