I think that for kids grip shifters work best ….. Let bike shop to fix it or adjust it if you do not know how . Maybe is something wrong with derailers and cables . This service is not expensive at all ……

Without much info I’ll take a stab at it. 1st Grip Shift works fine. The most common reason not shifting to 1st is too much cable slack. Shift the bike to it’s highest gear (smallest cog in back) Check the cable it is likely very lose. You should have a barrel adjuster where the cable meets the derailleur screw it out until the cable slack is gone. This cable tension needs to be perfect so all gears work well. Adjust in or out until all gears work.

There could be several reasons and MR gave one.

It could be that the cable is hanging up somewhere that is making the shifter tough to turn. Could also be that the springs in the derailleurs need to be “adjusted” by rebending to reduce the force. I’ve done this a thousand times.

Another reason is that the factory inadvertently put adult shifters on instead of youth. They look exactly the same but the youth shifters turn easier.

I don’t like grips on MTB’s… you sometimes switch them accidentaly, I don’t use grip shift.

sounds like cable adjustment or derailler stops
